Just spending time in the mountains can melt away the pounds, at least according a study conducted by German researchers that was recently published in the journal Obesity.</p>
<p>Dr. Florian Lippl of Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany, and colleagues, found that obese people who spent a couple of weeks at a high altitude mountain facility managed to lose weight without dieting. In addition, the weight loss was sustained for a minimum of 4 weeks after their return to normal altitudes.</p>
<p>Although prior research has shown that weight loss can be attained at high altitudes, the majority of these studies involved physically active hikers and athletes. The Munich researchers set out to determine if the same weight loss benefits could also be gained by relatively inactive individuals.</p>
<p>The study involved 20 obese male participants having an average weight of 230 pounds. First, the subjects were monitored for one week at low altitudes to examine what they ate, and how often they walked. Next, the participants were taken up in elevation to about 8,700 feet above sea level to an air-conditioned, mountain-based research facility where they spent two weeks.</p>
<p>During the stay at the mountain location, no restrictions were placed on what the participants were allowed to eat; however, they were not allowed to take part in rigorous exercise. Once the subjects were brought down to normal altitude, the researchers continued to follow them for four weeks. According to Lippl, the study findings revealed that while at high altitude, the participants lost approximately 3.3 pounds on average. The amount of weight loss, although moderate, was statistically significant when compared to the weight of the subjects at the start of the study.</p>
<p>The researchers theorize that at least part of the part of the weight loss can be attributed to the effects of the thin air on both appetite and metabolism. While on the mountain, the appetites of the participants were curbed, which was noted by a average decrease in calorie intake of about 734 calories per day, while an increase in metabolism caused participants to burn more calories without exercising. Another factor is that an increase in levels of the hormone leptin was observed while the subjects were at high altitudes, and this hormone can have the effect of making an individual feel full. Previous studies have shown that human cells produce more leptin when placed in a low-oxygen environment, such as that associated with thin air.</p>
<p>Once back in their normal environment, the study participants tended to walk more, which likely helped them to keep off the extra pounds shed at high altitudes. According to Lippl, this may be attributed to their feeling more fit since they no longer faced the stress of the low-oxygen, mountain environment.</p>
<p>Lippl said, “With a little humor, I tell my patients now, if they want to take holidays, they should think of mountain holidays [rather] than spending their holidays at the sea.” But, don’t run for your mountain retreat just yet. Further research will be necessary to confirm the study findings, and to determine what causes the high altitude weight loss effect.</p>
<p>Obesity rates continue to rise alarmingly across the globe. In the U.S. alone, rates have more than doubled among adults, while having more than tripled among children and adolescents from 1980 to 2008. The best weapon in the battle of the bulge is to develop a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and a proper amount of exercise.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Heartburn is a common digestive complaint which affects an estimated 15 million Americans every day, and 60 million once a month. Relief of mild heartburn is typically achieved through diet and lifestyle changes, although medication eg. antacids is usually necessary if the heartburn is caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD.</p>
<p>What is Heartburn? What Are The Symptoms?</p>
<p>Heartburn is a digestive problem it has nothing to do with your heart. It occurs when small amounts of stomach acid accidentally rise up the esophagus the food canal running from the mouth to the stomach causing symptoms like a burning pain in the chest which rises towards the throat. Sufferers may even taste the fluid in the back of the mouth, and this is called acid indigestion. In many cases the pain and burning sensation is relatively mild, but sometimes is so severe that patients think they are experiencing a heart attack.</p>
<p>What Are The Causes Of Heartburn?</p>
<p>In general, the immediate cause of heartburn is the acidic digestive juices which leave the stomach and rise up the esophagus. The acid burns the tissue of the esophagus causing inflammation and pain &#8211; a condition called esophagitis. Heartburn may also occur in pregnancy when the baby is pressing up against the underside of the diaphragm and squeezing the stomach. An occasional episode of acid-regurgitation or indigestion is quite normal. But persistent heartburn eg. twice a week, is usually a sign of something more serious. The two most common underlying causes of heartburn symptoms are gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD, and hiatal hernia.</p>
<p>Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease</p>
<p>GERD is characterized by a failure of the muscular valve, known as the lower esophageal sphincter LES, which is located at the bottom of the esophagus. The function of this valve is to keep acid in the stomach and prevent it leaking back up the esophagus. When this valve doesn&#8217;t work properly, reflux leak-back and heartburn can occur. Factors that contribute to gastroesophageal reflux disease include obesity, pregnancy, smoking and, in particular, hiatal hernia.</p>
<p>Hiatal Hernia</p>
<p>Hiatus or hiatal hernia is a condition in which part of the stomach herniates protrudes upwards into the chest through the hiatus opening in the diaphragm normally only occupied by the esophagus. This puts extra pressure on the LES valve preventing it from closing properly. As a result, stomach acid leaks into the esophagus causing heartburn. The underlying cause of hiatal hernia is unknown. Contributory factors include obesity, pregnancy, constipation, abdominal muscle strain, and smoking.</p>
<p>Dietary Treatment For Heartburn</p>
<p>In cases of persistent heartburn, dietary improvements are not sufficient. So as well as advocating a digestion-friendly diet, your doctor is likely to recommend one or more of the following types of medication. Antacids to neutralize the acid in your stomach; H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors to reduce acid production; or prokinetics to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter and expedite stomach-emptying. However, if heartburn symptoms are mild and occur only from time to time, usually you will be advised to make the following changes to your diet </p>
<p>If Overweight, Switch To A Healthy Weight Loss Diet</p>
<p>Obesity, especially excess fat on the chest and abdomen, is a common contributory factor to GERD and hiatal hernia, and therefore to heartburn. So if you are obese BMI  30, take steps to normalize your weight and thus reduce your risk or symptoms of heartburn. Choose a healthy calorie-controlled diet and customize it by following the eating tips below.</p>
<p>Stop Eating Large Meals</p>
<p>A big meal distends the stomach and causes a rise in the production of stomach acid. Both these factors lead to an increased risk of heartburn. So opt for 4-6 small meals or snacks, and allow a maximum of 3 hours between eating. In addition, choose foods that are &#8220;easier on the stomach&#8221; and more more easily digested.</p>
<p>Avoid Acidic Food</p>
<p>Reduce your intake of very acidic foods by avoiding items such as tomatoes, tomato-based sauces, citrus fruits, rhubarb, gooseberries, unripe fruit, vinegar and acidic pickles or relishes.</p>
<p>Cut Down On Fatty and Spicy Food</p>
<p>Fried or very fatty foods, including candy, encourage indigestion and should be avoided or eaten sparingly. So go easy on butter, mayo, sausages, salami, pate, meat pies, and full-fat cheese. The same applies to very spicy food such as black pepper, chili peppers, curry, mustard and other hot spices, as well as raw onions and garlic. </p>
<p>Avoid Carbonated Drinks</p>
<p>Fizzy or carbonated soft drinks cause belching and upward pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter LES, increasing the likelihood of heartburn. The best drinks include water, herbal teas or diluted non-citrus fruit juices. Please also note that some soft drinks eg. cocoa, coffee, orange juice are not helpful for heartburn as they can over-relax the LES, thus encouraging the backward flow of acid from the stomach.</p>
<p>Eat More Fiber, Especially Soluble Fiber</p>
<p>Constipation can lead to extra strain on abdominal muscles and increase the risk of heartburn. To prevent constipation, eat more high-fiber foods such as oats, apples, pears, dried apricots and vegetables. When increasing fiber intake it&#8217;s also important to increase your water intake by at least 40 fl oz a day.</p>
<p>Reduce Alcohol Consumption</p>
<p>Alcohol is not helpful to heartburn for several reasons. So take steps to reduce your intake to one unit a day, or avoid it altogether. Alcohol is also a source of non-nutritious calories and can contribute to overweight.</p>
<p>Other Digestive Tips</p>
<p>For digestive disorders like heartburn, some dietitians and alternative health experts recommend patients to eat or cook with digestion-friendly aromatic herbs like basil, camomile, caraway, dill, fennel, rosemary and thyme. They also recommend that you end each meal with a glass of herbal tea eg. camomile, fennel to reduce acidity and wind.</p>
<p>Lifestyle Improvements To Reduce Heartburn</p>
<p>There are several lifestyle changes that can help to reduce the symptoms of heartburn. One obvious one is to stop smoking, as tobacco smoke increases acidity in the stomach. Other recommended changes include</p>
<p>Avoid placing extra strain on your abdomen or chest. Wear loose-fitting clothes, and do not overstretch or lift heavy weights.</p>
<p>Do not lie down after eating, and try not to eat anything for at least three hours before going to bed. The less there is in your stomach when you come to lie down, the lower the risk of heartburn.</p>
<p>To minimize night-time discomfort, raise the head end of your bed by about 3 inches by using bed-blocks or by placing a solid object under the bed-legs. This helps to prevent stomach acid from leaking backwards into the esophagus. Do not use extra pillows &#8211; you simply end up with a stiff neck as well as heartburn!</p>
<p>Heartburn symptoms can be caused by certain over-the-counter drugs, such as aspirin, or other pain-killers or anti-inflammatories. So if you take this type of medication regularly, check with your doctor or pharmacist that it&#8217;s safe to continue.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Obesity is a world wide problem. Scientist across our nations is consumed with studying this problem. In just the last decade, obesity seems to be the problem that&#8217;s causing most of the diseases. It is no longer uncommon to find diseases like diabetes hitting kids. According to recent studies there are millions of kids below 18 who are getting diseases like diabetes. What shocked me the other day was a heart attack of a 22yr old boy. It scared me. With the growing rate of diseases, it seems like reaching the age of 50 in good health seems impossible for some of us.</p>
<p>The need of the hours is weight loss, rapid weight loss. Many people are resorting liposuction and other surgeries. I do not recommend going under the knife. I believe the best way to lose weight is to have a healthy diet and to exercise regularly. I do not recommend pills either. Obesity is a very treatable disease which does not require any kind of medication.</p>
<p>The first step in dealing with your obesity problem is recognizing you have a problem and realizing you need to do something about it. Some people are able to admit this fast enough while still others find it very difficult. Obesity is not always life threatening but if not taken care of it can become lethal. After realizing you have a problem, the nest step is to do something about it. You can choose what your next step will be, be it dieting, surgery, pills, gyming, exercising at home etc.</p>
<p>I recommend exercise. One of the most unconventional types of exercise is dancing. It may sound silly but it works. I have done this form of exercise and was surprised by the weight I lost. For women, I recommend you dance using high heels. It is a great way of exercising. You begin to sweat in just a few minutes. The famous Hollywood actress Kristie Alley knocked of most of her extra pounds doing this form of exercise. She now looks better than ever and is indeed still sexy and appealing to the opposite sex.</p>
<p>Dancing raises your heart rate whish is good. It also tones and tightens your muscles. Dancing helps you burn a lot of calories. You can lose as much or more calories dancing as compared to swimming, walking or riding a bike. Most of us hate the idea of exercising, it just doesn&#8217;t seem fun. Dancing is unlike any other exercise. It is fun. You get to choose your music and dance according to it. Due its unconventional form, this method of exercise is very appealing. Since dancing does not involve only repeating the same steps again and again, it isn&#8217;t monotonous. It doesn&#8217;t seem like a routine and hence is the perfect option for exercise. Mind you, results are ever so fast. I recommend hip hop since the beats are fast and force you to dance fast. Every half hour of dancing will make you shed a few pounds. Go ahead and give this a shot. Dance your way into becoming slim and sexy.</p>

Losing weight can be difficult for many people who use fad diets and pills to achieve their weight loss goals without letting their mind help in the process. </p>
<p>Visualization is a powerful technique that can help you make lasting lifestyle changes. Just by &#8220;day dreaming&#8221;, you can significantly improve your chances in achieving your goals. </p>
<p>Visualization is a great weight loss tool and its as simple as visualizing your body as you want your body to look like. This mental image of yourself is then transferred to your subconscious mind, which in turn starts to work on your body, shaping it in accordance with your mental image thus reducing your weight. </p>
<p>This means that if you program your subconscious with a mental image of yourself as a slimmer person, through persistence your mind will accept this and aid your body to conform to this mental image.</p>
<p>Once your mind is programmed with the proper mental images, it will start to work in assisting you to losing weight.  I cant stress enough how important it is for you to believe in your visualization goals.  You have to let go of past dieting failures and refuse to entertain any negative images that come into your mind. </p>
<p>If you can visualize your body at its perfect weight and proportions, the subconscious mind will work to make it become a reality. It will then begin to positively reinforce your body into aiding the metabolism and eating habits. Programming your mind into believing that you can lose weight, and to visualize yourself at your ideal weight is of the greatest importance. </p>
<p>Try to think of a different image of yourself, then let your subconscious do the work for you. If you think of your own body fat and being out of shape all the time, then the subconscious mind will find ways to make it so. </p>
<p>The subconscious looks after all of all your vital functions, it is the cause of all your good and bad habits, and also regulates muscle the muscles are controlled by the subconscious and body-fat composition on the body, and the latter is the one we are most interested in. </p>
<p>So please try to visualize your body as lean as you would like, and your mind will work on that image. The mind can be a great partner in losing weight. </p>
<p>Getting Rid of Bad Nutritional Habits</p>
<p>A bad habit is like second nature and is acquired over a long period of time. Bad habits are programmed into the subconscious and will power alone will not get rid of it.  Many try using all sorts of different ways to break it but without success.</p>
<p>Obesity is the result of bad nutritional habits and some of the causes are boredom, stress, tension and different complexes. Food becomes the substitution for these causes and before too long, obesity sets in. Most people become concerned that theyre obese, eat more and a vicious cycle is established.</p>
<p>The only way for lasting permanent weight loss is to break these bad habits and replace them with positive new ones, and the only way to do this is with visualization. Visualization puts you in charge of your subconscious where all these bad programs are stored. </p>
<p>All the will power in the world is not going to break these bad habits unless one has the help of their subconscious. </p>
<p>Relaxation</p>
<p>Relaxation the best way to reach the sub-conscious and will slow down the mind, turn off the exterior world so as to tune in to ones inner self. The best times for these sessions are in the morning and late at night right, just before going to sleep. </p>
<p>Try performing two sessions, one in the afternoon primary and the other before going to sleep secondary but once a day is quite sufficient. Sessions usually last 20 minutes, which isnt time consuming especially when taking in the benefits received. </p>
<p>It has been stated that one of these sessions is equivalent to 2 hours of deep sleep and upon waking you will feel revitalized and full of energy. Believe me instead of worrying about time constraints; you will be looking forward to the next session. </p>
<p>When you begin your relaxation sessions, make sure you wont be disturbed &#8211; lock the door, take the phone off the hook and loosen all clothing. Now find a comfortable position, whether it is lying down or sitting in a comfortable chair. </p>
<p>Sitting may be preferable as you may fall asleep if you become too comfortable. You want to be conscious and not asleep in order to tap into your sub-conscious mind. </p>
<p>Try to exhale all the air from your lungs completely and then breathing in through the nose.  Take ten seconds to fill the lungs with air not to capacity, but comfortable hold for ten seconds and then exhale slowly through the nose for another ten seconds.  </p>
<p>Each one of these breathing cycles should last for 30 seconds, complete five cycles and after each cycle you will be feeling more and more relaxed.  </p>
<p>If you are sitting, open your eyes and look straight ahead.  If you are lying down, open your eyes and stare at the ceiling. After a few minutes, slowly close your eyes.</p>
<p>Having reaching this calm relaxed state start your visualizations.  Put together images that power your emotions. Make them alive and colourful. Make the scenes as real as possible and imagine yourself as slim and toned the way you will look after successful weight loss. </p>
<p>Picture yourself ten weeks from now on the beach, walking briskly and confidently to your favourite spot, your breathing is normal and relaxed. You smile to yourself; you could keep walking like this for miles without feeling fatigued. </p>
<p>You lay your towel out and begin to take your clothes off revealing a firm, toned, well conditioned body. You have just bought a brand new swimming suit which just weeks before would have been lying in your closet waiting to be used. </p>
<p>Glancing around you notice the beach is busy, you catch the eye of someone of the opposite sex, they smile at you and you smile back. You walk confidently to the water and swim a couple of hundred yards with no problem or fatigue. </p>
<p>Or try this</p>
<p>Visualize your family and friends complimenting you about how good your body looks and how slim you look. Try to view the scene as it is happening this instant &#8211; in the present, not in the future. </p>
<p>Using these visualizations you can construct in your mind any scene that desire. See yourself exercising, socializing, in the company of friends. Try and hear people complimenting you about your slim new body, and watch their admiring glances. Make the mental image as real as possible. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>An extremely important part of your fitness program is being able to measure your progress.</p>
<p>Body fat testing is not painful, nor is it expensive. You can get it done at most any gym or fitness center. Simply ask if they have an expert who can measure body composition. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s also a good idea to take before and after photos and post them somewhere you&#8217;ll see them every day. </p>
<p>But most importantly, measure  5 &#8211; 10 different aspects of your progress.<br />
My most successful clients measure everything in their life that&#8217;s affected by their weight loss, normally on a simple scale from 1 &#8211; 10, such as</p>
<p>- their daily energy level<br />
- their attitude<br />
- the way they feel when they look in the mirror<br />
- the way they fit into their clothes<br />
- the compliments they get from people<br />
- their level of mental focus<br />
- their waist, hips, and thigh measurements<br />
- their body weight<br />
- their body-fat level<br />
- their endurance in their workouts<br />
- etc, etc, etc&#8230; </p>
<p>Make a long list of ways you can measure your progress &#8211; but be sure to include things that are truly important to YOU. If having loads of energy is important to you, then you should be measuring your energy level every day to see if your diet andor workout routine are doing their job.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you already have a lot of daily energy, than you might not want to measure that &#8211; you might prefer to measure other things that are more important to you at your current stage of life.</p>
<p>Take time to design your list, then chart your progress in a daily journal every day for each of the categories on your list. Then take an average for the whole day, and write that average at the top of your page.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In your pursuit of a leaner body, you know doubt utilized a bathroom scale to chronicle your progress. However, you may have been doing yourself a grave disservice. As you know, a scale measures how much weight you have lost, but it will never tell you where this weight was lost from. This is where the problem lies. When dieting, your combined weight loss could potentially come from fat loss, water loss, or muscle loss. Obviously, the former is what we all want to achieve, and the latter two are what we need to try and avoid whenever dieting. Unfortunately, many of the fad diets claiming rapid weight loss are often achieving this at the expense of water loss andor muscle loss. Generally speaking, if you are losing greater than two pounds per week you are likely losing muscle as well.</p>
<p>The best way to monitor your progress when embarking on a new diet is to measure your body fat percentage and your lean body mass. Lean body mass is your weight excluding fat. Lean body mass includes bone, muscle, and other fat free tissues with the majority of this being muscle. By measuring these two items, you will be able to determine how much fat you are losing and whether or not you are losing any muscle. The simplest way to measure your body fat percentage is through skinfold testing. If you know a personal trainer or other fitness professional in your area, they will likely be able to take these measurements for you. However, self skinfold testing is available with the use of the Accu-Mesure, which can by found easily online.</p>
<p>Once you have determined your body fat percentage, you are ready to calculate your fat weight and lean body mass. To calculate your fat weight, multiply your total weight by your body fat percentage. Remember to convert your body fat percentage to decimal form before multiplying. I.e. 11 body fat would be converted to .11 Once you have calculated your pounds of fat, subtract your pounds of fat from your total weight in pounds, which will give you your lean body mass.</p>
<p>Armed with these simple equations, you will be able to track your weight loss much more accurately than by simply using a scale alone. You will know exactly where your weight loss is coming from, so you can quickly make adjustments to your caloric intake to maximize your results. For example, if your lean body mass decreases and your body fat decreases, this should tell you there is to much of a calorie deficit and you should increase your daily calorie intake slightly to prevent the loss in lean body mass. Whenever youre on a calorie restricted diet, some loss in lean body mass and therefore muscle is hard to avoid. However, this loss in lean body mass should be limited to a few tenths of a pound per week. Initially, when first starting a diet program, you will likely notice a larger drop in lean body mass due to water loss. Dont get alarmed by this. An obvious downward trend in your lean body mass over time is definitely a concern.</p>
<p>It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss proper nutrition and how to calculate daily caloric needs for weight loss; however, I will mention a simple formula that can be utilized to get you in the ballpark if you have average or better body fat percentages. To calculate your total daily calories needed for fat loss, multiply your total weight by 12-13. This will give you a good starting point. I will also mention that spreading your calories out over 5-6 meals per day with each meal consisting of approximately 55 complex carbohydrate, 30 lean protein, and 15 fat will give you the best chance of permanent fat loss. Obviously, these percentages may not work for everyone, but they are a great place to start. If you want to maintain your hard earned muscle, it is also imperative you maintain a weight lifting routine, while dieting.</p>
<p>I hope this information will help you achieve all your weight loss goals and help you understand exactly how your nutrition and diet program is affecting your body. There is certainly still a place for the bathroom scale, but unless youre also measuring the items above, you will never fully realize the affect of your diet program and reaching your full potential may be difficult.
