Having occasional heartburn attacks is quite common for most individuals. Heartburn, which is also known as pyrosis, is a burning or painful sensation in the esophagus that is commonly caused by the regurgitation of gastric acid. This condition is noted to be one of the causes of mimic asthma and chronic cough.

Heartburn is oftentimes falsely associated with heart disease or condition like heart attack. In fact, it has really nothing to do with the heart. Some people think as such for the burning sensation is felt at the breastbone, the spot where the heart is located.

Causes of heartburn

Certain foods and drinks

 1. Chocolate
2. Spicy food
3. Sodas carbonated beverages
4. Citrus juices and fruits
5. Garlic
6. Wine
7. Tomato sauces
8. Peanuts

Psychosomatic causes

 1. Fatigue
2. Stress

Drugs

 1. Cocaine
2. Caffeine
3. Alcohol
4. Tobacco

As enumerated above, the causes of heartburn are generally linked to the improper or too much intake of foods that do not give good effects to the body. If one is suffering from heartburn, a doctor will immediately recommend the most common treatment, which is Antacids. This medication will surely neutralize a persons acidity in the stomach.

Moreover, treatments for those who have chronic heartburn attacks vary, including endoscopy. The said test further analyzes and determines the true cause of the condition. This way, patients will know if there are other complications associated with their heartburn attacks.

Avoiding heartburn

It is not necessary for one to shell out a lot of cash just to seek treatments for heartburn. In fact, those who suffer from this condition can get effective remedies for heartburns from the very comfort of their homes.

 1. Eat as many apples as you can.

Just like what the famous rhyme says, An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Yes, eating apples is a good way of treating heartburn. A person can eat as many apple as he can without having to worry about any detrimental side effect. Experts claim that an apple effectively neutralizes acid inside the body. Plus this delicious fruit is known to be rich in vitamins and minerals, thus, helping the body to become fit and healthy.

 2. Drink Aloe Vera juice or distilled white vinegar.

Aloe Vera juice is one of the most common natural remedies for heartburn. One is sure to have instant relief to heartburn with just a few ounces of this juice. This juice is widely available at local supermarkets and food stores.

As for distilled white vinegar, some people regard this as a great natural cure for heartburn. Once the burning feeling begins to well up, one should drink a tablespoon of this vinegar to immediately ease the pain of heartburn.

 3. Avoid foods that can trigger heartburn.

Probably the best way to avoid heartburn attacks is to simply refrain from eating too much foods that are known to trigger the said condition. Maintaining a healthy diet as well as eating in moderation will surely keep one from having heartburn problems.

Acid reflux is a disease characterized by the abnormal reflux or rise of gastric contents from the stomach into the esophagus resulting in chronic symptoms and mucosal damage. So it occurs when one of the two closures or sphincters in the esophagus fail to remain sealed after food or liquid intake and the contents get spilled into your larynx and pharynx instead of in your stomach.

Causes of acid reflux

Acid reflux is often caused by temporary or permanent alterations in the lining that actually separates the esophagus from the stomach. It is the ineffectiveness of the lower esophageal sphincter LES or the temporary LES relaxation connected to hiatus hernia that causes severe acid reflux. In adults, the most common symptom of acid reflux is acute heartburning sensation caused by acid resting in the esophagus. The painful sensation continues behind the sternum or breastbone. Another common symptom of acid reflux is esophagitis, which means that the person suffers an inflammation of the lining of esophagus. This simultaneously causes swallowing difficulties and chronic chest pains.

The cause of acid reflux in infants and children is their undeveloped digestive system. So the best way to avoid acid reflux in children is taking them to the doctor for immediate and fast medication.

Symptoms of acid reflux

Sometimes acid reflux is also characterized by rapid coughing, persistent pains in the ears, sinusitis, hoarseness or even complete change in the voice. When you are suffering from acid reflux, you should immediately visit the doctor for medication. Do not neglect as severe acid-reflux may lead to formation of a stricture or ulcers in your esophagus. Often persons suffering from acid reflux diseases can experience tasting something sour or salty behind the throat. However, other less common symptoms of acid reflux includes chest pain, swallowing, halitosis or bad breath, repeated throat clearing and water brash hyper-secretion of saliva.

Instant remedies of acid reflux

To provide immediate relief to adults in case of acid reflux, you can try out with some homemade remedies. Instead of taking tea, you can have tea mixed with aniseed, peppermint, honey and lavender. However, you should have 8 oz in the morning and 8 oz in the evening for immediate relief.

Following is a brief account of other immediate home remedies

1 Have digestive enzymes containing Betain, pepsin or HCl components with each meal.

2 Papaya digestive enzymes, which contain papain, are also excellent dosage used for protein digestion.

3 Have pineapple as it supports digestion, reduces acidity effectively and supports wound healing.

4 Sprinkle cinnamon on your bread and have it to reduce acidity.

5 Eat organic grapefruits that are dried to remedy excess acid reflux.

6 Have romaine lettuce that will help to eliminate acid reflux or severe heartburn conditions.

7 A daily mixture of nutmeg, mace and slippery elm reduces indigestion, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach gas, and vomiting and severe heartburn.

Treat acid reflux effectively to reduce any further complications in your stomach.

You have just enjoyed a heavy, delicious meal and are looking forward to relaxing. Suddenly, you encounter a painful and burning sensation in your throat. This is called acid reflux. If you experience this frequently, you will be unable to enjoy your meals. Persistent acid reflux or heartburn can also lead to permanent damage of your esophagus. When this problem occurs more than twice a week, you should consider it serious. If you are suffering from this problem, do not worry. Here are some tips to cure this problem.

What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux disease occurs when the acid from your stomach enters your esophagus repeatedly. This is due to the weakness and relaxation of the sphincter muscles that lie between the esophagus and stomach. Since the acid does not encounter any barrier, it returns again and again to the esophagus.

What causes acid reflux disease?
High fat foods are the culprits that give rise to this problem. They weaken the muscle temporarily.

How do I treat the acid reflux problem?

There are some simple methods to treat this problem.

Since high fat foods are the primary cause, control your intake of such foods.

Change the position of your bed. Sometimes, you might get immediate relief by raising the head of the bed. Keep 4 to 6 inch blocks below the bed bedposts. This keeps the acid away from the esophagus due to force of gravity. But it does not work in all the cases.

Use antacids. But use this as a short-term method or if you suffer from the problem rarely. If you use antacids for a long time, the acid in your stomach decreases, giving rise to other problems.

Change your lifestyle habits. Quit smoking if you are a smoker. Reduce or quit drinking. Include more fiber in your foods. Eat small and more frequent meals to ensure that your stomach does not get totally full. Eat more complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Cut down on your intake of fatty and fried foods. Include herbs like ginger in your meals. This is the best, healthiest and a long-term solution.

If you are having acid reflux problem for a long-time then it is advised to consult a physician.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is the medical term for what most people refer to as acid reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal is a relatively new term for acid reflux disease. It has been used for approximately the past 20 years. Before that it was just referred to as heartburn. But heartburn is just one of the symptoms of GERD. Some of the other symptoms of GERD are regurgitation, hoarseness or laryngitis, the feeling of a lump in the throat, coughing, bad breath, asthma, difficulty swallowing, and water brash. Some people with GERD do not have any symptoms at all.

What happens to cause GERD? It starts with acid in the stomach washing back up into the esophagus repeatedly, which happens if the lower esophageal sphincter becomes relaxed.

Some foods and beverages can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. This is not an all-inclusive list but some of the most common are chocolate, licorice, peppermint, fatty foods, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol. Barbiturates, calcium-channel blockers, Diazepam and Sumitriptan are some of the medications that cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and allow acid back in to the esophagus.

Lifestyle changes can be very effective in helping to control GERD although over- the-counter medications, prescription medications, and possibly surgery, may also be necessary. Some of the lifestyle changes that may help control GERD include losing weight if you are overweight, avoiding high-fat foods, not lying down right after eating, not eating large heavy meals i.e. dont overstuff yourselfespecially on fatty foods, and stopping smoking if you are a smoker.

GERD can be a difficult disease to diagnosis. That is because of the wide range of symptoms people can experience and the complication of some people not experiencing any symptoms at all. It is easier to diagnosis if a person is experiencing the classic symptoms of GERD which are heartburn and regurgitation. In some cases a physician will not do tests right away but will first prescribe over-the-counter or prescription medications to see if they clear up the symptoms.

If the medications do not take care of the symptoms then a physician will likely do one or more of the following diagnostic tests x-rays with a barium swallow, an upper gastrointestinal x-ray series, an upper endoscopy, an esophageal manometry, or a 24-hour pH probe. The reason physicians may try over-the-counter or prescription medications before running tests is because some of the tests, such as the upper endoscopy and pH probe are invasive, and because of the costs of some of the tests.

After diagnosing GERD, a physician will recommend lifestyle changes such as the ones mentioned earlier in this article to help control the GERD, and depending on the severity will recommend over-the-counter medications or will prescribe a stronger medication by prescription. The medications may need to be continued indefinitely because over half of all people who stop taking their medications after getting their symptoms under control have a recurrence within a year.

If the medications do not alleviate the symptoms, surgery may be needed. Surgery is also an alternative to having to take medications indefinitely. A procedure called a Nissen fundoplication is the type of surgery typically done to relieve GERD. In the surgery the upper part of the stomach located near the esophagus, called the fundus, is wrapped around the lower esophagus. Doing this strengthens the barrier function of the lower esophagus, thus preventing gastreosophageal reflux and repairing the main irregularity that occurs in people suffering from GERD. The surgery is usually done laparoscopically. It is considered a safe surgery but remember any surgery carries risks that typically gives good results.

If you regularly suffer from heartburn, you know that there is not much worse in life than the pain of an acute attack. Perhaps you have paid your druggist a visit in search of help or you have seen your doctor, yet you still suffer intermittent attacks. What more can you do to get relief? Overhaul your diet! You may not need to make extreme changes in what you eat, but you must be attentive to which types of foods can trigger an attack. The following list underscores which foods may trigger an attack

Beverages Beer, colas, and nonalcoholic wines are some causes of heartburn.

Dairy Yogurt, frozen yogurt, milk, certain types of cheeses, and cottage cheese.

Fats and Oils Ketchup, especially spicy ketchup.

Fruit Many berries can cause problems including blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Other triggers include orange juice, peaches, grapes, and apple juicecider. For orange juice lovers you can still drink your favorite beverage, but select low-acid orange juice when visiting your grocer.

Grains Garlic bread, granola cereal, and many types of muffins may cause an attack.

Meat Beef, fish, tuna, ham, hot dogs, egg, and chicken salad can cause heartburn. For some folks chicken by itself is just fine, but added ingredients such as mayonnaise can cause heartburn.

Sweets and Desserts Low fat cookies. You may save on calories when eating low fat cookies, but the artificial ingredients contained within them can set off heartburn.

Vegetables The big triggers in this category are onions, leeks, garlic, scallions, and sauerkraut.

Besides avoiding certain types of foods, there are medications that can stop heartburn including Nexium and Prevacid. Alternatively, some heartburn sufferers have found relief through natural remedies such as Acidgone.

By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, some heartburn sufferers have found relief. In addition, avoid excessive use of caffeinated products, alcohol, and nicotine. Finally, by selecting smaller food portions and eating less you can thwart future attacks.

You dont need to be held hostage by heartburn; see your doctor if attacks persist as it could be a sign of some other problem.

Sleep is a basic necessity of life. It is as important to our health and well-being as air, food, and water. When we sleep well, we wake up feeling refreshed, alert, and ready to face daily challenges. When we don’t, every part of our lives can suffer. Our jobs, relationships, productivity, health and safety. Those around us are also put at risk. Definitely, excessive loss of sleep or sleep disorders take a serious toll on one’s productivity and quality of life.

According to the 2002 National Sleep Foundation NSF, a recent poll on sleeoing in America found that 74 percent of American adults are experiencing a sleeping problem a few nights a week or more; and that 39 get less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight. The statistics also show that more than one in three Americans or 37 of respondents are so sleepy during the day that it interferes with their daily activities.

In the past century that was relatively less stressful compared with the average schedule of a worker, the number of hours of lost sleep grew steadily. Though our society has changed and evolved our lives into a more complex and rigorous task, our brains and bodies have not adjusted to those changes. Based on health and productivity statistics, sleep deprivation is affecting us all and we are paying the high price.

Though a lot of us have suffered from sleep deprivation, as every sleep researcher knows, the surest way to hear complaints about sleep is to ask the elderly. More than half of men and women over the age of 65 years complain of at least one sleep problem. Many older people experience insomnia and other sleep difficulties on a regular basis.

As we get older, our sleep patterns change. In general, older people sleep less and experience more fragmented sleep. They also spend less time in deep sleep and dream sleep than younger people. There are several factors that may contribute to these sleep disorders, namely

	Poor Sleep Habits

	Medical Illness

	Medications

	Depression or Psychiatric Disorders

Sleep Disorders such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder
Retirement and Boredom

Irregular sleep-wake patterns can affect an individual’s circadian rhythm and make it hard to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Other behavioral issues, such as consumption of alcohol before bedtime, increased wakeful time in bed, or daytime napping, can also affect a person’s ability to sleep. Certain chronic medical conditions are common in older people. Some of these conditions, including heart failure, arthritis, heartburn, menopause and Alzheimer’s disease, can affect sleep. These conditions can make it hard to fall sleep or may cause the person to awaken frequently. This will ultimately affect the duration and the quality of sleep of the elderly. Some medications may impair a person’s ability to fall asleep or stay asleep and may even stimulate wakefulness at night.

Old age is characterized by many life-events, both positive and negative. Life changes such as the death of a loved one, moving from a family home, or physical limitations due to illness can cause significant stress and sleep difficulties. Retirement often leads to a lot of downtime with less daytime activity and can lead to an irregular sleep-wake schedule and chronic sleep problems.

Every person’s sleep needs are different. If one is getting less sleep than when they were younger, but still feel rested and energetic during the day, it might just be that the person need less sleep. However, if a person noticed that lack of sleep is affecting his or her daytime activities, a visit to the doctor is essential. There are steps that can take to improve a person’s sleep quality, whatever age we might be, but help is most especially needed among the elderly.

Does that cup of morning coffee cause you pain and suffering? Are you frustrated when an evening dinner out with friends ends in discomfort instead of relaxed conversation? Do you carry and take antacids every day?

Heartburn is a lot more than a mere nuisance. It can detract from enjoying a good meal and force you to change your routine. It dictates your every decision – what you can eat, what you can drink, when you need to lay down.

What is this vexing problem and how can you find relief?

WHAT CAUSES HEARTBURN?

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid makes its way back into the esophagus. A burning sensation and bitter taste are commonly experienced by heartburn sufferers.

If you are suffering more than a couple of times each week you may have the more serious problem of acid reflux disease – also known as GERD gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Not all heartburn is caused by GERD. Occasional heartburn can be caused by many different factors. However, if you have regular episodes there are a number of things you can do to help.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you have regular heartburn, the first thing you should do is stop regularly using antacids. Antacids can alleviate the pain of occasional heartburn, but because they are designed to neutralize the acids in your stomach they can cause the stomach to create even MORE acid – a vicious cycle called ‘acid rebound’. Also, some antacids cause diarrhea or constipation.

Avoid heartburn-triggering foods such as caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, citrus, spicy or tomato-based foods as well as fatty or fried foods, onions or garlic.

Smoking or being overweight also increases the risk of GERD. Lifestyle changes may help to control the symptoms.

Activities such as lying down after a meal, bending forward, lifting heavy items or eating large meals can cause the onset of acid reflux. Avoiding these activities after a meal and eating smaller portions may help.

A few natural products such as extract of orange peel are being researched for their abilities to curb heartburn.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR GERD?

Anyone. But it should be noted that pregnant women, the overweight and smokers are all good candidates.

Additionally, young babies have immature digestive systems, so they may be prone to GERD. Precautions like frequent burping and keeping the infant upright for 30 minutes after eating can minimize the occurrence.

Older children may have to take precautions in diet and activity just as adults do. You should always consult your physician when you suspect GERD, just to avoid future complications.

If you suspect GERD, contact your doctor right away. There can be harmful side effects of persistent heartburn including scarring of the esophagus, erosion of the teeth and even an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Frequent, persistent heartburn can also be a symptom of other serious conditions and should be checked on by a physician.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that is characterized by difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and mucus accumulation. People with asthma have extra sensitive or hyper-responsive airways. During an asthma attack, the airways become irritated and react by narrowing and constructing, causing increased resistance to airflow, and obstructing the flow of the air passages to and from the lungs.

Some research indicates that the symptoms of asthma may get worse when you have heartburn or acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when your undigested stomach content moves back up into your esophagus.

Acid reflux can cause painful heartburn which you can relieve with antacid medicines or natural remedies. Antacids simply neutralize your stomach’s acid, which reduces the burning sensation in your esophagus tube. It is best to use natural remedies first because neutralising stomach acid is a temporary method and only serves to suppress the cause of acid reflux.

For acid reflux, it is best to use digestive enzymes. Take a good digestive enzyme with every meal you eat. The next step would be to learn how to eat so you don’t get acid reflux or heartburn.

Acid reflux happens mostly in people who are older and overweight. But sometimes it can happen in children and in all types of people.

In some studies, researchers have injected acid into the esophageus of people with asthma, and it had a significant impact on their asthma and increased their asthma symptoms.

These is also evidence to suggest that people who have asthma get acid reflux more often than people without asthma. This is probably because of the big pressure changes in the chest during breathing in people with asthma. These high pressures could force liquid to travel the wrong way up the esophagus.

In these cases, asthma sufferers seem to lose out twice they suffer from asthma and they may suffer from acid reflux more often than non asthma sufferers.

However, this is not the whole story. If acid reflux really was an important cause of asthma worsening, then treatments against acid reflux should make the asthma better, however, this is generally not the case.

In the meantime, if you have asthma and you also have acid reflux, it could just be that careful treatment of your reflux will make your breathing better.

If your asthma is bad and no-one knows why, some doctors would check whether you have or had acid reflux by conducting tests to measure the acidity in your stomach. If the result showed a tendency for acid reflux, then your doctor should help you eliminate this condition.

Using a doctor who uses natural methods to treat acid reflux is the best way to go. Using drugs to eliminate acid reflux when you are already taking drugs for asthma is asking for addition health problems in the future. Drugs do not cure acid reflux and cause Theis condition to worsen. It is best to use natural remedies and diet to eliminate acid reflux and heartburn.

If you have acid reflux or heartburn, using natural remedies to rebalance your stomach is what nature intended. Listed are four natural remedies that you can use to rebalance the acid in your stomach

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has many medicinal uses aside from being great for various pastries. It has an antiseptic effect and has been historically used for colds and flus. It has fighting power against Candida albicans and has the ability to settle acidic stomachs.

Heres how to use cinnamon for an acid stomach or heartburn

 Toast raisin bread
Butter the raisin bread
Sprinkle cinnamon on the bread
Sprinkle cardamon on the bread

When you eat this toasted bread, chew slowly and completely before swallowing to allow the digestive juices in your mouth to start breaking down this food.

Cardamon, which is found in India, has been used successful in treating Celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten found in most breads.

Grapefruit Skins

Here is a way to settle your acid reflux stomach with grapefruit. Use only organic grapefruit for this remedy. Heres what to do

Grate the entire outer skin of an organic grapefruit
Spread them out on a flat dish to dry
Allow them to get crinkly dry
Store them in a glass jar or zip lock bag

Whenever you get an upset stomach, acid reflux or heartburn start chewing and eating these strips of dried grapefruit. These strips will settle out your stomach. Eat only a few of them and test to see how many you need.
Romaine Lettuce

Romaine lettuce can be used to eliminate an acid reflux or heartburn condition. This lettuce is high in minerals and is highly alkaline.

Heres what you need to do

Buy an organic romaine lettuce head
Wash in distilled water
Cut up the leaves and place them in a blender
Add cold distilled water to make a slurry
Add a slight amount of honey to give it taste

Drink a 4-8 oz to get relief from your acid reflux or acid stomach

Mace, Nutmeg, and Slippery Elm

Here is a natural remedy that uses mace and nutmeg, which has a history of treating indigestion, acid stomach, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach gas, and vomiting.

Heres how to use it with half and half and slippery elm root herb. Slippery elm herb can be purchase in any herb store in powder.

1 teaspoon of slippery elm bark
a pinch of nutmeg
a pinch of mace
add distilled water to make a smooth slurry
heat a pint of half and half to boil
pull half and half from stove and add herb slurry
stir in herb slurry

Allow this mixture to cool. Drink up to cup at a time. Store the unused portion in the refrigerator. When drinking the next cup, warm this mixture up.

Acid reflux and heartburn require alkaline nutrients to provide relief. These 4 natural remedies, when prepared properly, will give you the relief you need from these conditions. Try them; you will be surprised on how well they work

In the 1940′s licorice was discovered to be useful in treating peptic ulcers. Unfortunately it had side effects that lead to high blood pressure, potassium loss, and fluid retention.

Researchers discovered that the ingredient in licorice that caused those side effects was “glycyrrhizin.” They were able to remove 97 of this chemical and the result was a product call “deglycyrrhizinated” licorice, DGL. DGL maintained its healing properties but had no side effects.

DGL was first used to heal ulcers in the stomach and duodenum without suppressing stomach acids. DGL worked just as good as the drugs Zantac or Tagamet that are designed to suppress stomach acid.

As more people used DGL, they found they got relief from a variety of stomach issues – heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating, and gas. In addition, they found using DGL was better than using antacids or acid blockers.

DGL works by improving and restoring the integrity of the esophageal, stomach and duodenum lining. It does this by promoting mucus release and cell rebuilding. The mucus released provides gastrointestinal lining protection from acids and gives the lining time to rebuild and regenerated. The result is healing and strengthening of the affected tissue.

Here’s how to use DGL. DGL comes in large tablets that you place in your mouth and allowed to melt. You can chew them slightly but not swallow them since it is your salvia that helps activate the DGL.

By allowing DGL to melt in your mouth the resulting liquid will now run along your esophagus and start the healing process where ever there is tissue inflammation or damage.

Use two tablets 3-4 times a day on an empty stomach. Do not use any water when you are taking the tablets. You can take the tablets at least an hour before you eat and an hour after you eat.

Although DGL provides relief for heartburn, acid reflux and other stomach disturbances it does not totally provide a cure. It does provide recover from damaged gastrointestinal lining as occurs with ulcers, but does not change the level of stomach acid.

In some cases Heartburn is caused by to little or to much stomach acid. When too little acid is causing heartburn or acid reflux it makes no sense to use antacids or acid blocking drugs which decrease your stomach acid even more. Low levels of stomach acid leads to serious illnesses.

Because so much is still unknown about the cause of acid reflux or heartburn, it is known that DGL can give you some acid reflux relief and in some case mild cases cure it.
